Learning Goal: I will co-create media analysis success criteria so that I understand how to effectively analyze media.
1. Hot Topic Media Analysis Success Criteria -> how do you effectively analyze media? (what do you look for and identify?) -> how do you know you've met expectations? - discuss Friday's hot topic Men Are Shopping Like Women - analyze the article 2. Reading Learning Goal: I will use my media analysis skills to critique a hot topic so that I understand how the media conveys its multiple messages.
1. Reading 2. Catch Up Work Time - I looked through many of your folders last night and very few people had copies of their blogs in them -> if that means you have them on weebly, that's fine but remember that weebly can crash and you can lose all your work -> you should have a back up copy in your Google Drive -> I didn't find any reflective blog posts... -> yet again, please make sure your site published and the address on my form (the link can be found on yesterday's task list) -> I really dislike emailing parents to let them know their son or daughter isn't doing their work in class but I will. Consider yourselves informed. Please don't make me follow through... 3. Fun Thursday: Hot Topic - as yesterday was stand up to bullying day, this is a timely article that shows the human spirit - as well as looking at the content of article, I would like you to analyze how the two different news outlets are selling the story to their viewers - what kinds of strategies are they using to appeal to us? - why has this story gone viral? - check out the Instagram account for this girl -> thinking about it as a media piece, make a few observations - please create your own Google Drawing (put it in your folder) and annotate it to explain what the media has done to help sell this story (think how many of you take pics then doodle/add comments on them for SnapChat.) Learning Goal: I will use my inferencing skills so that I can practice making predictions about written text
1. 30 minutes of silent reading. 2. Individually: spend some time on a variety of news websites. (CBC, CNN, CTV, Toronto Star, BBC etc.) and find an article you think is interesting or would generate conversation with your peers. -> design a discussion question to stimulate conversation in class (you will want to make sure it is open ended so that people can share their thinking effectively) -> when you have your question designed, please write it on one of the whiteboards -> take a look at the questions your peers have posted and make an inference (your best guess) as to the content of their article 3. Make sure your first blog post is up and published on your website as tomorrow, Huron will be reading and commenting on your blogs. -> so far I have 18 responses to my form -> if you have not posted the link to your blog on my form yet, please do so today 4. Reflective Blog Writing - after reading blogs from other students, I want you to think about your own writing. We aren't comparing, but using this as a learning opportunity - what did you notice from others and how can you use some of their skills to enhance your own work? - you are also going to reflect on your own skills - what are you happy with in your first post? what do you feel you can improve? what is your goal moving forward? Learning Goal: I will edit and revise my blog posts so that I improve the quality of my written work. 1. Writing Pet Peeves or why my mother never wanted to take me to a pet store... 2. Here are two grammar resources that you might find helpful - The Oatmeal - Chomp Chomp 3. Blog #1 Peer Editing - you are going to share your blog post with a peer and/or Ms. Weir or Mr. Bieronski and have one or all of them give you feedback about your content and writing style - here is an example of good peer feedback from students in our class (Yay!) 4. Blog Writing Reflection
- after reading a blog post from a peer, I want you to think about your own writing. We aren't comparing, but using this as a learning opportunity - what did you notice from the post and how can you use some of their skills to enhance your own work? - you are also going to reflect on your own skills - what are you happy with in your first post? what do you feel you can improve? what is your goal moving forward? 5. Reading Learning Goal: I will use my organizational skills to plan an appropriate schedule so that I will have read my book on time. 1. 30 minutes of silent reading 2. Reading Schedule Planning Time 3. Hot Topic Introduction - discussion
- collaborative inquiry "Multitasking: myth or amazing human characteristic?" - you will be researching in groups with Huron - please use one gdoc to collect your research *** be sure to keep track of your sources so we can discuss the quality of the website from which you got your information! - be prepared to share your thinking with the classes |
